Xiao Hu Nan Chen You Dao Gong(陳優道公)

Xiao Hu (小姑) is located approximately ten mile from Yongchun county. There are four mountains located at the North, South, East and West of Xiao Gu. During the Qing Dynasty under Yong Zhen’s(雍正) administration, it was redesignated as a state and placed under the governance of Fujian Province (福建)- - Yongchun Administrative State(永春直隸州). Yongchun Administrative State (永春直隸州)governs three county Dehua (德化), Yongchun (永春) and Da Tian (大田).When the Republic of China was established, it was redesignated as Yongchun County(永春縣), Xiao Hu(小姑) was renamed Hu San Xiang(岵山鄉), and this was the founding place of Xiao Hu South Chen (小岵南陳) ancestry . (there are few people not with the surname Chen(陳) in this place)

Our ancestry started with Xian Wei Gong (校尉公) (953AD).However it was not till the 15th generation that You Dao Gong (優道公) built the first ancestral shrine. Thus, our clan always considers You Dao Gong (優道公) as the founding father. Legend had it that You Dao Gong (優道公) was very young when he came to Xiao Hu(小姑) , as he was unfamiliar with both the people and the place and also tired from the journey and being very late, he decided to squat under the eaves of a house to rest. Perhaps he was too weary, he fell asleep while resting. He slept until dawn. The owner of the house where You Dao Gong (優道公) rested had the surname Wu(吳). When he was asleep at night, he had a strange dream; he saw a gigantic pine tree covering the whole village growing from the left side of his house. In the morning, Wu (吳) found an intelligent looking boy outside his house. He took a liking towards the boy and took him in and raised him up. As the boy grew up, Wu found him to be hardworking and honest . Thus he decided to give his own daughter to You Dao Gong (優道公)in marriage.

After marriage, You Dao Gong (優道公) felt that as a man he should not be dependant on other and he should have his own career. The in laws agreed and gave him few acres of land for him to cultivate. ( the land was located at the lower side of Mt. Wu Ying Nan(吾穎南山). After making up his mind, You Dao Gong along with the relatives and friends, worked together to construct a house to stay in. After finishing, he named the house Mt. Nan hut. They then picked an auspicious day to move in. Grandmother Wu passed away. They perform the filial ritual. At the left side of his house, he built a shrine named Xiang Gong Gong (相公宮) where they worshipped Wu An Zhun Wang (武安尊王).This was the beginning of our ancestral footing in Xiao Hu(小姑) .

The South Eastern side of our village is low lying with northeast, northwest and southwest slightly higher. Xiao Hu stream (小岵溪) originated from Da Pu village’s (達埔鄉) mountain stream. It passed through the northwest corner of our village’s Pan Stream (潘溪) and Tang Pang Stream (唐旁溪) through several other stream and bridge until it reached Nan An County (南安縣). On the sourthern side of Pu Wei bay (鋪尾灣), there was a huge piece of terraced land, against the hill and facing the water. This is where big and small streams interchanged and blessed with abundant natural water. Those streams never dry up all year long. Thus the village cultivated the land in spring time. For the long period in summer, autumn and winter, the wild weed grew with plenty of insect. In between the stream and drain, fish and shrimp breed. This was the ideal place for poultry. Our ancestor started duck rearing with grass roof shelter. The ducks were able to find food on their own. There were no wild rats. Under this condition, the ducks thrived. It was not unusual for a female duck to lay 2 eggs in a day. It was all due to You Dao Gong’s (優道公) hard work and foresight that our clan prospered. Unfortunately he died young. In 1398AD, his children cooperated to rebuild the ancestral shrine.

Our grandparents were well known for their kindness and generosity. They had 4 sons. The eldest and the fourth son had many descendants scattered all over the county and also in provinces such as Fujian Province(福州), Nan'an County(南安縣) etc. Our clans also spread to Wu Li Jie Wei(五裏街尾), through Xi Zhou(溪洲) until Xi Xiang (西向)( Xian Village)(仙鄉). Many had also settled in the South East Asia region. This was all due to our ancestor’s graciousness that our clan can prosper.

That year there was a big earthquake. The royal emperor bestowed the imperial decree “The Dismount Tablet” 「下馬碑」, and imperial robe, sacrificial vessel. (Imperial Decree “Dismount Tablet” 「下馬碑」: Presently placed at the ancestral temple, at that time the tablet was very prestigious, every royal government official, no matter what rank they occupied, when they saw this “Dismount Tablet” 「下馬碑」, they must salute and then only they may leave, otherwise, they were guilty of deceiving one's monarch, therefore nobody dared to disobey. Sacrificial vessel: Incense burner of the ancient times sacrificial utensil also, three legs, made from Qi Bao Copper(七寶銅), according to the clan, it was placed under the care of Chen Yun Wu(陳雲梧), head of the clan at that time. Every year during the first day of the first lunar month, the clan will bring out the sacrificial vessel and placed before the ancestral shrine and then burn incense to pay respect for their ancestors, after 3 days, they will put it back into the storage again. At present it is still perfectly preserved. Imperial robe (龍袍): It was said that it can treat various illnesses but it has already disintegrated)
